Information on the immersion heater
The heater in your home called an immersion heater operate in a way that is not unlike the electric kettle in you kitchen, just on a much bigger scale. It is made up of an electrical heating element (this is the immersion part) contained within a very large cylinder and then is filled with water. The electrical power supply is then applied and the water heats. A thermostat controls the temperature of the water contained in the cylinder and cycles on and off as required to keep the correct temperature which is a high of 60 degrees C. Hackney Plumbers can fit immersion heaters. This protects the user from being burned. Should the water be kept below this temperature there is a chance of the growth of the Legionella bacteria. Therefore a strict balance must be maintained. Where the immersion heater or (electrical element) is fitted a cylinder that is unvented it requires a high limit cut out thermostat to be fitted (90degrees C). Any new and replacement immersion heaters will include, as standard, this type of independent non re-setting over temperature safety cut out device to prevent boiling of the water in the cylinder. A Hackney Plumber has experience on thermo cut outs. A Hackney Plumber is highly aware of the dangers of legionella.Legionella:Legionella is still thankfully quite a rare occurrence in the domestic environment. The legionella will die at a temperature of 60 degrees C and above. It doesn’t survive very long at this temperature, thankfully. The bacteria will, however, survive in the temperature range of 20/45 degrees C. It spreads through vapour or mist and is dangerous to human life. This means that areas around, say, a boosted shower outlet with its high power spray could be really vulnerable if the water temperature is kept lower. The best idea is to store the water at 60 degrees C and use a mixer valve on the shower to keep the temp regulated.“
