The Garden Tap (fitting)

The tap for the garden used to be quite a luxury, however, it is now very popular and a common fitting in more gardens than not. Its uses are varied from filling the paddling pool to washing the the car, bike or even the kids! (for fun of course). Hackney Plumbers fit various outdoor plumbing.

You will need:
15 mm copper pipe.
Draincock.
Bib tap.
Stopcock.

Method.

Isolate the water supply before attempting a job like this or you will have a flood on your hands. If you are not confident, hire a professional.

Find a good place to drill the first hole from inside to out, this probably being under the sink ideally. Now drill a 25mm hole through to the outside. This should be around the height of the knee if possible and as near as possible to the rising main. You need to cut into the riser and then you will have to fit a joint called a ‘T piece’. From this piece you must fit a short length of hosepipe, then the stopcock, then the non-return valve, and the drain cock. Ensure that all direction of flow if marked are followed. Now for the difficult bit, and that is the making a neat job of the various joints while also ensuring that the pipework fits closely to the walls. From the drain cock, run a pipe through the wall so that it connects to the bib tap, and screw the tap securely to the wall. A Hackney Plumber will do this. Finally, having first checked that all the joints that you have made are dry, pack the hole in the wall with lots and lots of material, maybe, fibreglass roof insulation or foam, then squeeze silicone sealant in and around the outside end of the whole to prevent the possibility of water leaking through. Reinstate the water supply and the job is done.
